On different pages…

As many of you know, the ERASMUS students have made groups on the social network facebook for the NOT FOR SALE CAMPAIGN.  The following comments were made on my facebook “wall” the other day shortly after I invited a friend from high school to join.  This morning… that Mike Paz (Erasmus Student) has responded…  WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Friend From High School:

“omg stop inviting me to that group

first
those people are thousands of miles away and their sphere of existence is totally independent of mine, yours, or any other young American “activist” whose only actual perception of slavery is as an extremely negative, unrealistic construct that’s been imprinted on us by elementary school teachers and popular culture

my point is that they really don’t matter to you. you don’t care. you want to care. stop thinking about it for like a week and look back and think of what awesome productive things you could’ve been doing instead of feeling guilty and futile about a situation you have nothing to do with

second
the type of slavery that that group claims to be against is totally different from the type of slavery that this country used two hundred years ago. slavery in many areas of the world continues to play integral, traditional roles like paying off debt (labor is used since there’s scarce reliable capital or goods)… it’s temporary, humanistic, and natural. these international liberal shithead groups know that you hear the world slavery and your mind (and wallet) explodes with how you’ve been taught to respond throughout your childhood

so yea you can make cool, hip pictures of a human sihloutte inside a bar code and hold signs up saying you aren’t for sale as you fervently seek to impart some meaning on your downwardly spiraling life that seems less and less able to fulfill you without pretending to adhere to the Good Cause of the Day

but in the end it’s just Tits or GTFO … being sexy for a cheap price is in style and there’s nothing that makes you feel hotter than screaming at the top of your lungs about something that you know is RIGHT!

do you feel cool yet?

Mike:

dear jesse,

your first point states that these people are thousands of miles away and are relatively independent to the lives of US citizens. Victims of forced labor are trafficked into the United States from at least 38 different countries. they are faced with various degrees of threats and violence to ensure their services . these victims are trafficked into restaurants you eat at, these victims make the bed in the hotels you sleep in, and these victims will make the next shirt you buy. Take a look around because your life is impacted by the slave trade, even if you fail acknowledge it.

Your second point states that the modern slave trade lacks any similarities with the African slave trade. I find this to be a troubling assumption on your part because it is widely known that a.) In both cases, the victims were forced into labor b.) In both instances of slavery, victims were brutalized. In the same breath, you say that the slave trade is the needed to keep the economy of these areas of the world stable. Modern day abolitionists not only are calling for freedom for these people, but rehabilitation so that they may enter back into society and work for just wages and just rights. Mai is a bit keener on business and can probably tell you how the correct work environment for a worker can, undoubtedly, create the highest profitability for any type of business.

I also feel that all your idiotic personal jabs at mai are a reflection of your intelligence on a subject that you either a.) poorly researched, b.) know nothing about, or c.) you don’t care about. Im pretty sure that the usual procedure involving facebook groups are a click on the confirm key or deny key. Next time you don’t like something someone sends you click the deny key and hold back on the questioning of a person’s ethics and moral character, even if it makes you feel “cool.”

If you have anything else to say message me so we don’t flood mai’s wall.”

Leave comments… what page are you on?????

Best,
Mai
